- Abstract:
- The evaluation of hydrocarbon source condition and resource potential for hydrocarbon-generating depression is the essential foundation of petroleum exploration in petroliferous basin. The quality of source rock could be assessed by common geochemical experiments of samples effectively, but the character of the whole depression can not be revealed. The depression can be evaluated by direct calculation of resource quantity, which needs lots of data, so it is unsuitable in low level exploration area. A new parameter, the index of hydrocarbon source (IHS), was proposed. IHS is defined as a numerical index assessing the hydrocarbon quantity provided in a depression, and it is calculated by depression area, maximum thickness of source bed, sediment facies, kerogen type and maximum depth. The IHSs of twelve sags in Wenchang Formation of Huizhou depression, Pearl River Mouth Basin were calculated, and the power correlation between IHS and resource quantity calculated by genetic volume method was built based on “source-controlled theory” and black box. This relationship is verified fine in Dongying depression of Bohai Bay Basin. IHS was used to quickly evaluate the resource potential for Enping depression with low exploration. The results show that the total resource quantity of EP17, EP18 and EP12 sags is 13.193×108 t, and Enping depression is rich in hydrocarbon; the hydrocarbon source condition of EP17 sag is best and rich. As a new parameter, IHS includes the information of both depression volume and source rock quality, and the parameters for calculating IHS are common and accessible, so it is useful to rapidly evaluate the resource potential of depressions, especially the low level exploration areas.
