Abstract:
Based on remote sensing and GIS technology, this paper monitored and analyzed the spatial-temporal characteristics of the land desertification in Tibet by using MSS and TM data acquired in 1976 and 2000 respectively. According to the monitoring result, the land area of desertification in Tibet is 2.908× 105 km2, which occupies 24.28% of Tibet whole land. The sandy desertification in Tibet is 2.499× 105 km2, which occupies 20. 86% of Tibet whole land. The area of land desertification in 1976 is 2.7× 105 km2. The analytical result of remote sensing also shows that the gross land area of desertification in Tibet has increased 20 764.67 km2, the increase rate of each year is 0.32%. Obviously, the degree of desertification becomes severer. The area of the severest sandy desertification and desert has increased 315.87%.
